Board Names Brian Whiston as New Superintendent

By a vote of 7-0 the Dearborn Board of Education approved a resolution to appoint Mr. Brian Whiston to serve as Superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools. The offer is contingent upon acceptance of a mutually agreeable employment contract subject to Board approval.   He succeeds Dr. John Artis.

Mr. Whiston is currently serving in his 11th year as Director, Government & Community Services, Oakland County Intermediate School District.   He has also served 17 years as a board of education trustee, is the President-Elect of the Michigan PTSA and has lobbied many times on education issues in Lansing and Washington, D.C.

Senate Passes Smoke-Free Bill

Website administrator's note:  This message was received yesterday from the American Cancer Society. As Michigan finally closes in on smoke-free status for places frequented by the public, take a moment to appreciate that not only will an evening out be more pleasant, but more importantly, that fewer of our children will ever be diagnosed with lung cancer, whether they smoked or not.  More than just a breath of fresh air.

****************************************************************************************************************

After fighting off several bad amendments, the Michigan Senate passed its version of HB 4163 by s 25-12 vote! Sen. Ray Basham (D-Taylor) successfully introduced language that removed all exemptions from the bill. If enacted, the bill will now protect ALL Michigan workers, including those that work in restaurants, bars and casinos, from secondhand smoke.

Next, the bill will be sent back to the House for a concurrence vote. They could vote as early as next Tuesday! Please stayed tuned for next steps and how you can help.

In the meantime, please thank the senators that voted “yes” today:

Senators Anderson, Basham, Birkholz, Brater, Brown, Cassis, Cherry, Clark-Coleman, Clarke, George, Gleason, Hunter, Jacobs, Jelinek, Kahn, McManus, Olshove, Pappageorge, Patterson, Prusi, Schauer, Scott, Switalski, Thomas, and Whitmer. You can find their contact info by going to http://www.senate.mi.gov/.

Thanks to all of you who made calls, sent emails, and contacted your Senator in support of a statewide smokefree air law! This is a huge step toward making Michigan a smokefree state!

Thank you,

Judy Stewart
Director of State Government Relations
American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division
